Building With Hendrickson Construction (HCI)

We believe the best projects start early — well before a full set of construction drawings is complete. Our preference is to meet with clients at the beginning of the design process so we can understand the vision, evaluate feasibility, and help shape a smoother path to construction.

Early involvement allows us to review constructability, identify potential challenges, and offer strategic input that can make the project more efficient. Because we specialize in technically complex homes in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley, thoughtful pre-planning and coordination often saves clients meaningful time and money. Many of the most expensive delays and change orders can be avoided simply by addressing key decisions and logistical realities before the plans go too far.

Budget alignment is a critical part of that early process. Construction costs can grow quickly in Aspen, often without clients understanding exactly why. We work hard to bring clarity to costs upfront and ensure the architect and designer have a realistic budget framework before drawings progress. Too often, we’re brought in after a design is well underway, only to find the scope and level of finish far exceeds the client’s intended budget — and the reset can be costly in both time and design fees.

To prevent this, we prepare a ROM (rough order of magnitude) budget based on early plans or design intent, along with a preliminary schedule. This gives clients a clear understanding of expected cost and timing while the design is still flexible. Adjustments made early are far less expensive than changes made after hundreds of hours have been invested in drawings and specifications.

As the plans evolve, we stay engaged through the selections and specification process so we can anticipate long-lead items, coordinate procurement, and keep the project moving. Early selection guidance also creates opportunities to value engineer intelligently — protecting the design intent while keeping costs under control. The goal is never to compromise the end result, but to make sure decisions are made with full visibility into cost, timing, and execution.

Throughout construction, we run consistent, structured communication so the project stays aligned and decisions don’t drift. We hold weekly OAC meetings (Owner / Architect / Contractor) to keep everyone on the same page. These meetings are where we review progress, confirm upcoming milestones, resolve open questions, and make key decisions before they become delays. A regular cadence with the full team is one of the simplest ways to protect schedule, reduce rework, and ensure the finished product matches the design intent.

In addition to weekly meetings, we provide daily visibility through Houzz Pro, which we use as our client-facing project dashboard. Houzz keeps the entire project organized in one place and gives clients easy access to updates without having to chase emails or texts. Through Houzz, clients can review daily progress photos, see current and upcoming selections, track schedules and deadlines, approve change orders, and keep communication organized by topic. It also creates a clear record of decisions and approvals, which helps maintain clarity for everyone involved and keeps the project moving efficiently.

As we approach the finish line, we focus on delivering not just a beautiful home, but a well-documented home that is easy to own, operate, and maintain. During closeout, we compile and organize project documentation and provide the owner with two key deliverables: a warranty package and a complete home manual. The manual includes equipment documentation, product data, maintenance requirements, warranties, and manufacturer manuals for all major systems.

In addition to the documentation itself, we prepare an overall “how to run the house” guide — written in a practical way — so it can be easily handed off to a property manager for execution. The goal is to make ongoing operations and maintenance straightforward, reduce confusion, and protect the performance of the home over time.
